The Nordhavn 59 Coastal Pilot The Dog House is truly in a class of her own. The Dog House is a 2019 model that is extremely well equipped by a meticulous owner. The Dog House started her life on the east coast in Florida and cruised the Eastern Seaboard and the Bahamas for two seasons. After her time on the east coast The Dog House was then shipped through the Panama Canal up to Ensenada, Mexico in 2021. Since then, she has cruised the Channel Islands, Catalina and Baja, Mexico.
The Dog House has a 4-cabin layout with a forward galley and aft salon. She also boasts an additional day head in the aft starboard corner of the salon. The interior wood selection is an elegant cherry wood with a 60% gloss varnish, and a textured wall covering adorns the bulkheads in certain areas throughout the vessel above the chair rail height. The Dog House is the Motor Yacht version of the Coastal Pilot series, which mean the salon/galley area has been extended aft by about four feet, which really adds quite a bit of interior volume. The Motor Yacht version also provides a full height engine room all the way to the transom as the cockpit deck has been relocated aft by about four feet as well. No space is lost by the cockpit being moved aft, the only thing given up is the lower fishing deck. The final positive feature of the Motor Yacht version is the extended boat deck, which makes for a wonderful space on this upper level.

Specifications
As you walk aboard The Dog House you will enter from the extra-large swim step. The port side of the swim step has engine room access through a watertight pantograph hinged door. Access to the cockpit is up a few stairs on the port side. The cockpit of The Dog House has been very well thought out, and the deck is non-skid for low maintenance. There is a secondary access hatch on the deck into the engine room as well as a soft hatch in case large equipment from the engine room needs to be removed or installed. There is loose deck furniture that can be stowed away in a larger seaway if needed. Typically, on the Nordhavn 59 you would see a stainless-steel ladder with FRP steps leading to the boat deck on the port side of the cockpit. However, The Dog House has a molded FRP staircase with teak treads, and this allowed Nordhavn to fabricate this staircase with a lighter angle making it easier to access the upper deck. This staircase also allows for more storage in the cockpit area. Inboard of the staircase is (an optional) stainless steel sink built into an FRP console with overhead locker storage as well.
From the cockpit one will enter the aft salon through a double hinged watertight door. The port side of the salon is equipped with a comfortable “L” shaped settee and dinette. The table has hinged leaves so it can be folded for smaller parties or opened up when more guests are onboard. The starboard side of the salon is equipped with a private day head in the aft corner. Forward of the day head is another settee facing inboard toward the dining area, which makes for a great conversation area. The salon TV is located on the forward bulkhead and can easily be viewed from both settees. Leaving the spacious salon and moving forward one will find the galley to the port side and the helm to the starboard side. We will start in the galley. The galley has been built in a “U” shape to allow for easy access to all components. The Vitrofrigo refrigerator and freezer are located on the aft bulkhead of the galley. The area above the freezer was left open to the salon intentionally to allow for a more open feel to this main interior deck. Outboard of the refrigerator is a second top loading freezer under the countertop level, which was a practical use of a space that could have been an empty void. In the middle of the galley is an island with storage below. As well as being filled with storage, this island doubles as a great leaning post and a place to stabilize yourself in a larger seaway. The galley is equipped with a Kohler double basin stainless sink as well as the following appliances:
- Sharp KB6424PS drawer microwave
- GE Profile cooktop #PP9830SJSS
- GE Profile vent hood #PV970NSS
- GE Profile oven #GPT7050SFSS
- GE Profile trash compactor #UCG1680LSS
- Vitrofrigo refrigerator with fridge drawer and freezer drawer stainless steel front
- Vitrofrigo undercounter refrigerator, stainless steel front
- Haier HFC3501ACW top loading freezer
Opposite of the galley area lies the helm, the main electrical panel and the entrance to the private master cabin. The helm has been equipped with everything an operator would need for a vessel of this size. Navigation and electronic equipment are listed below in the Navigation section. The helm bench has been raised several inches to allow the operator better visibility. The step up into the helm has also been removed, and is a nice feature as an operator can now stand at the full height helm. Visibility from this area is truly amazing and makes maneuvering the Nordhavn 59 an ease. The main electrical panel is located aft of the helm area. The panel has been set higher than normal which means the operator no longer needs to bend down to access this panel. It’s really at a more comfortable height on The Dog House.
Access to the private owner’s cabin is on the starboard side just aft of the helm down a flight of stairs. All other cabins are accessed forward of the helm and galley. Once downstairs there is a queen size berth with ample hanging locker and drawer storage. Port lights in the hull allow for natural light into the owner’s cabin. There are ventilation blowers to bring in fresh air to this area. Accessed thru the aft bulkhead in the owner’s cabin is the head, fully equipped with a spacious countertop with storage below, a Tecma toilet and a molded FRP shower. The owner’s cabin is located midship, so this a very comfortable cabin. With the cherry wood below and the lighter wall covering above the chair rail level, this roomy cabin feels light and airy.
Access to the three guest cabins is forward down the centerline of the vessel. Down a few steps there is a forward landing area, and from here off to the starboard side are the full height Bosch 800 Series washer and dryer tucked away in the corner out of sight, but still very easy to access. The port side of the landing is home to the guest head. The guest head can be accessed from the VIP directly as well as from the forward landing. This is a full head with a nice vanity area, Tecma toilet and FRP molded shower. The forward VIP guest cabin is equipped with a queen berth, ample hanging locker and drawer space as well as a 32" TV hung on the aft bulkhead. Portlights in the hull allow for natural light and overhead Lewmar hatches allow for fresh air. Aft of the lower landing is access down a few steps to the other two guest cabins, one to port and one to starboard. These are great cabins for additional guests. Each have portlights for natural light and ventilation blowers for fresh air, nice dressing areas and plenty of storage.
On to the exterior spaces on The Dog House. Since this version of the Nordhavn 59 is the Motor Yacht, the flybridge and boat deck areas have been extended for more usable space. The covered flybridge has a 3-sided removable enclosure, which is very nice to have in rainy or windy weather. On the flybridge there are two settees, one on each side facing inwards. Then there is a center settee with seating facing forward which doubles as the helm bench and seating facing aft with a fixed dinette table. The Dog House has the optional FRP molded hardtop with lighting on the underside and non-skid on the topside for safety. One additional feature added to The Dog House is the flybridge BBQ console on the starboard side. This console has a Kenyan Texan electric BBQ as well as a stainless steel under counter drinks refrigerator and stainless sink. There is a custom cover made for the entire console. The boat deck aft holds an AB ALX12 center console tender with a 30hp Yamaha outboard. There is a custom tender cover for this as well. To lift and retrieve this tender there is a 1,000-pound capacity Steelhead davit. The davit is a full function davit, power boom up and down, power boom rotation, power boom telescoping and power winch functions. This really makes launching and retrieving the tender much easier and safer for the operator. The foredeck area on the 59 is a great lounge area. Sundeck cushions were custom made to fit this space, handrails and cup holders are integrated into this area as well.
Finally, on to the machinery spaces of the Nordhavn 59 The Dog House. From the swim step one enters the aft portion of the engine room. Nearly all mechanics and technicians compliment this space once onboard. It is a truly massive area, and the full height headroom allows for easy access anywhere in the engine room. The two Cummins QSM11 715 HP engines stand proud in the middle of the engine room with room to access all four sides of each room and more. The Northern Lights 16kw generator is mounted centerline with a stainless-steel workbench above with an ER sink built in. There are FRP molded storage lockers lining the port and starboard sides as well as on centerline above the workbench. All other components such as the watermaker, dive compressor, water heater and pumps all have the easily accessible homes in the engine room. There is a secondary entrance to the engine room from a deck hatch in the cockpit. A stainless-steel ladder down from the deck allows for access. Nothing was left out in this engine room.
