This vessel was originally provided to Seal Beach Weapons Station as a Submarine Net tender, after which ownership was transferred to Newport Harbor patrol, and other local entities, where it served in various capacities adding local historical value.
Higgins Industries manufactured three of the J-Boats for the US Navy – M5409, M5464, and M5465 all of which were slightly modified from the J-Boat / Utility configuration that included a power take-off on the original Universal 4-cylinder gas engines for net handling. Approximately 830 J-boats (utility) were constructed under US Government contract #7041-6-00998-** by different boat builders. There are seven known remaining J-boats in existence with two in museums and five in private ownership.
The subject vessel is the sole survivor of the three J-boats built by Higgins Industries*.
This vessel was designated a Historical Vessel by the state of California.
The vessel OLD NO. 9 is a true Icon of the Newport Beach Harbor.
