There is a perception among some who feel that the Nordhavn 62 is the “true Nordhavn” in the history of Nordhavn Yachts. While this is subject to opinion, the “62”, along with the “46” as the two original models, certainly helped establish the undisputed reputation of Nordhavn Yachts as trans-oceanic capable powerboats. “Saumlaki” is hull #1 of the Nordhavn 62 series. She bears her original name, as she has through her chain of ownership, and she continues to further the Nordhavn reputation for durability as well as seaworthiness. Along the way she has benefitted from her custodians who have updated and upgraded her systems as new materials and components have become available. She is ready to continue logging miles a thousand-plus at a time.
The Nordhavn 62 legacy is described below by Dan Streech, Founder and President of Pacific Asian Enterprises/Nordhavn Yachts, who has also logged thousands of miles on 62s including, of course, Saumlaki:
Nordhavn aficionados are a very passionate group who follow and love all things Nordhavn. There is a subset of Nordhavn aficionados who despite the 20+ new Nordhavn models that have been introduced since the Nordhavn 62, ESPECIALLY love the Nordhavn 62 and consider it the “one true Nordhavn” which is pure in every way. The Nordhavn 62 was designed in the early 90s and her distinctive “North Sea” profile and style and underbody has caused “love at first sight” for thousands of people over the 30+ years since she was introduced. To this day, a Nordhavn 62 still turns heads and creates a stir when she pulls into a harbor. Saumlaki is hull #1 of the series. She started it all and she is now available for purchase. Saumlaki’s current owner has recently completed numerous upgrades and has prepared her for more wonderful adventures for the next owner. With Saumlaki, you will be owning an important piece of Nordhavn history.
“Saumlaki” is a “walk-around” version of the Nordhavn 62 with port and starboard side decks for ease of line and fender handling. She is also a four stateroom, four head model that includes a crew cabin forward.
The inherent maneuverability and sea-keeping ability of the 62 underway, coupled with the assistance of powerful hydraulic bow and stern thrusters for close-in handling and docking, assure that she can be operated easily by a couple. With all her fuel, water, and equipment specifications, her crew can be very self-sufficient for extended periods untethered to the fuel dock. The dry stack exhaust and keel cooling of the Caterpiller main engine helps establish the reliability to confidently cross any ocean, as so many Nordhavns have done.
There have been several variations of the interior layouts of the Nordhavn 62s. Saumlaki’s four sleeping cabin layout, plus watch berth in the pilothouse, offers the most flexibility in a vessel with such legendary performance characteristics.
There have been many significant updates under the current ownership as outlined below.
RECENT UPDATES:
-New aluminum lower fuel tanks replacing original steel tanks
-New Kobelt main engine control with handheld remote
-New interior carpets
-Interior joinerwork refinished

Interior Layout - General
Salon
Board through a bulwark door on either side deck. Enter the salon from the starboard salon door, or the larger aft double salon door. The interior woodwork is done in gloss varnished teak. Entering from the cockpit through the aft salon the C-shaped dinette is to starboard. The dinette provides seating for six for dining, plus viewing of the TV mounted to port.
Two armchairs in the salon are designed for stability but can be moved around the salon as desired.
Galley
Forward in the salon the galley extends from the port side across the centerline. A recently installed full-size refrigerator creates cold storage capacity enough for weeks of cruising. The Frigidaire smooth top electric cooktop is a recent addition as well. The Krushr trash compactor and Toshiba microwave are also new additions that should provide years of service.
The galley counter is an easy to clean composite material. The configuration is such that there is a social connection to the salon creating a convivial atmosphere.
Recent Appliance Updates
Frigidaire freezer/fridge (2018)
Krushr trash compactor (2020)
Frigidaire oven (2018)

Hallway Access
At the bottom of the steps to the hallway is an alcove that includes the separate stacked washer and dryer, the main electrical distribution panels, tank monitoring gauges, and the engine room door. The engine room and salon are also accessible from their respective doors on the starboard side deck.
Owner’s Stateroom
Moving forward in the hallway to port and across from the laundry alcove is the entrance to the owner’s stateroom and ensuite master head with shower. It features a queen bed with drawer storage beneath, nightstands either side of the bed, a contoured work desk with drawer and shelf storage, and hanging locker space.
Port and Starboard Guest Staterooms Forward
Further forward are the port and starboard guest cabins each with a head and shower ensuite.
The port guest cabin has over/under, (athwartship and longitudinal) bunks, a built-in chest of drawers, and a head with shower forward in the space.
The starboard guest cabin also has over/under, (athwartship and longitudinal) bunks forward, and head with shower aft in the space. There is drawer and locker stowage space as well.
Forward Crew/Guest Cabin
The forwardmost crew/guest cabin is accessed either through the head in the port forward guest cabin or through the foredeck hatch. There is a single berth to port with a pipe berth over. Outboard to starboard is a sink and vanity with locker and drawer storage. There is a hanging locker aft to starboard. An enclosed head/shower is accessed through a door forward in the cabin. There are multiple storage compartments as well.
Pilothouse
The aft pilothouse is upstairs from the forward end of the salon, conveniently close to the galley. With its commanding view and spacious accommodations, the Nordhavn 62 pilothouse is where the crew gravitates and is a wonderful place to spend time. The dinette can accommodate four crew. In addition, Saumlaki is one of the 62s with a day head in the aft section of the pilothouse just aft of the top of the steps. There is an adjoining cabin with a watch berth. The operational area of the pilothouse includes an expansive instrument console, with chart table area to starboard, and a comfortably adjustable Stidd helm chair. The electronics are easily legible from the helm chair, and there is still plenty of room for any electronics to be added.

Deck Layout – General
The foredeck has plenty of room for storing two tenders plus additional water toys. It is easily accessed from the pilothouse via the Portuguese bridge, or from the starboard side deck from aft. All the way forward twin anchor rollers and a hydraulically driven Maxwell 3500 horizontal windlass has plenty of power to handle either anchor. Just forward of the Portuguese bridge are two custom made stainless steel fender racks.
The side decks are secured by high bulwarks all the way aft to the cockpit. There are boarding doors through the bulwark on the port and starboard side.
On the starboard side deck are two doors accessing the interior – one is access to the engine room and the other is access to the base of the interior pilothouse steps, galley, and salon area, especially handy when stocking the galley.
All the way aft is the cockpit with room for deck chairs and includes a built-in storage module.
Saumlaki has a beautifully designed and unique custom swim step with folding boarding steps. The design lends itself well to mooring stern-to, diving, or boarding tenders and kayaks.
Up on the pilothouse deck, and aft of the pilothouse, is a bench with backrest seating area fitted with canvas upholstered foam cushions. In a typical at-anchor situation with bow into the wind, the pilothouse creates a nice lee for the area. There is sufficient room to accommodate two or more deck chairs as well.
