“Originating in the Maine lobster-fishing industry, Downeast style boats are appreciated for their classic lines, exceptional seakeeping abilities, and refreshingly simple layout. They are well-known for providing comfort and stability while underway, mostly due to their narrow entry which eases back to a soft chine. They do not pound in a head sea and track exceptionally well in a following sea due to their long keels, large rudders, and soft chines that allow the sea to deflect outward with ease.
There are many Express Cruisers built to look Downeast, but a true Downeast boat is largely defined by what’s below the waterline, not above. The 50’ Duffy Custom 2008 was designed to be a fast trawler, built at the Atlantic Boat Company in Brooklin, Maine. The original ownerswere a very wealthy, elderly couple that needed to go when they wanted to go, regardless of weather, and in comfort. The owners of ENDURANCE maintained meticulous records and logs of every trip and service, from the build photos and schematics file to the March 2024 bottom job.
